A comprehensive list of all the events that happen at Rio throughout the year.

RDMPA Community Events

These events are not fundraisers, instead they aim to help build a thriving Rio community.

Kinder & New Families Meet & Greet - August

Held a few days before the start of the new school year, this is a chance for new families to briefly visit classrooms, and then to meet the RDMPA for coffee and treats in the playground.

Ice Cream Social - August

Held on the first Friday of the new school year, this event is a chance for families to catch up after the summer break, and for new families to meet. There are food trucks, games, music and free ice cream!

Movie Night - September

The RDMPA hosts Movie Night on the school baseball fields. The family-friendly movie starts at sunset, and families can bring blankets and chairs to enjoy the show. There is a snack bar, plus free popcorn.

Harvest Festival - October

This is our biggest community event of the year with games, activities, face painting, prize booth, food trucks and music.

RDMPA Fundraisers

These events raise money for our school.

Run For Rio - March

This weekend fun run at Seascape County Park is a popular annual event. Younger participants can take a shorter route around the park, with others taking on a 5k in support of Rio.

Spring Auction - April

This event is our biggest fundraiser. The in-person auction is held at Seascape Golf Club after Spring Break, and the online auction runs during the same week.

Bubble Run - May

This on-campus event is a fun end to the year. Students run laps of the track through streams of bubbles.

Other RDMPA fundraisers

  • Direct Ask - starts August and lasts all year long

  • Drive For Schools - September-October

  • See's Candies - November for Holiday candy, and March for Easter candy

  • Restaurant nights - monthly

  • Burrito Stall and Bake Sale to raise funds for field trips - at Open House in May

Rio School Events

These events take place on campus each year.

Back To School Night - September

An adult-only event. Families are invited to visit their child's classroom for a brief presentation from teachers, followed by presentations in the cafeteria by the principal, RDMPA president and Site Council president.

Picture Day - September

Lifetouch visits campus to take photographs of all students.

6th Grade Science Camp - September

6th Graders spend the week at a sleepover science camp.

Teacher-Parent Conference Week - November

This whole week is minimum days, with families invited to attend a conference with their child's teacher.

Book Fair - November

Book Fair takes place the week of conference week. Families are invited to visit the library to purchase books in support of Rio.

Second Harvest Food Bank Fundraiser - November/December

Students raise money for Second Harvest Food Bank.

Science Fair - February

Grades 2 - 6 are encouraged to take part in our annual Science Fair. Students create their own project to research at home, and then present their findings to a panel of judges. The projects are displayed in the cafeteria for classes to visit.

Math Night - May

An evening of math-themed activities in the cafeteria for students and their families.

Open House - May

Families are invited to visit campus with their children to view their work throughout the year. Burritos and baked items can be purchased at our fundraiser stalls.

STEAM Week - May

Rio hosts a variety of STEAM activities and organizations for students to enjoy and explore.

Teacher Appreciation Week - May

A week to celebrate our teachers. Room parents will organize activities for their classrooms.

Kinder Promotion - June

Kinder families join together to celebrate students' promotion in the cafeteria, and meet afterwards in the blue playground for a fun party.

6th Grade Graduation - June

6th families join together to celebrate students graduating.

Staff Appreciation Lunch - June

The RDMPA organizes an end of year luncheon for all Rio Staff.

Monthly Whole School Assemblies

Parents are invited to attend when their children are being awarded certificates.

Other:

  • School Play - each year the After School Program presents a play. Dates and details change annually.

  • Musical Winter Showcase - students perform Holiday themed songs they have learnt in music class

  • Talent Show - in the Spring, students put on a show to demonstrate their wide range of talents

  • Field Trips - each teacher organizes their own field trips

Meetings

These regular meetings are open to all families to attend.

RDMPA Monthly Meetings

The Rio Del Mar Elementary Parent Alliance meets once a month to discuss ongoing activities, fundraising and event planning. Find out more.

Rio Site Council Meetings

The Site Council meets six times a year to discuss all things Rio.

Rio Traditions

These events are long-standing traditions at Rio.

3rd Grade End Of Year

The 3rd grade carnival is organized by parents and takes place on the top playground. There is face painting, hair spray, games and snacks.

4th Grade End Of Year

Visit to a local movie theater.

5th Grade End Of Year

Visit to the Beach Boardwalk.

6th Grade Halloween Party

Halloween party and taco stand for 6th graders.

Holiday Parties

Classrooms celebrate Halloween, the Holidays, Valentines and the end of year.

5th Grade Friendship Breakfast

Instead of separate Valentine’s Day parties, the classes come together in the MPR for a “Friendship Breakfast” organized by the room parents.
